Description

Are you an international student with a conditional offer at the University of Ottawa?  Are you required to complete ESL2121 and/or ESL2361 as part of your condition for admission into your undergraduate program?  Then the University of Ottawa Academic JumpStart Course is designed for you!  Here are the aims of this course:

  • To help you develop the academic and linguistic skills necessary for your success in undergraduate studies at the University of Ottawa;
  • To support you in adapting to life on campus and in the community so that you are ready for your academic courses in September;
  • To offer you the chance to make friends and meet fellow international students prior to the start of the fall term; and
  • To give you the opportunity to complete ESL2121 or ESL2361 before the fall term and to help you succeed with this course.

In the University of Ottawa Academic JumpStart Course, you will develop strategies and skills to help you succeed in your undergraduate courses under the guidance of supportive language professors while developing your skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing using Englishfor academic purposes. You will jumpstart your academic career at the University of Ottawa by being well prepared to succeed in your courses and your life on campus.

Life at uOttawa

To help you jumpstart to success at the University of Ottawa, we have planned a dedicated orientation day on Friday July 19 2019.  We will introduce you to campus and community life, provide you with strategies for adapting to Canadian and campus culture, and offer you tools and strategies for academic success.

*To receive a certificate of completion for ESL0160, you will need a minimum grade of 70% (B) and a minimum attendance of 80%.  
** To pass ESL2121 and satisfy your admission requirement, you will need a minimum grade of 70% (B) and a minimum attendance of 80%
***Campus integration workshops will be offered from 2 pm – 3:30 pm.

Tuition

The tuition fee for this program is $2,889.  This fee covers all courses, including ESL2121 or ESL2361, photocopies and handouts, and campus integration workshops.  Note that textbook purchases and University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) fees are separate.   

How do I Register?

Planning to join us? Great! Here’s what you need to do:

Step one: Click on the ‘Register Now’ button at the top of this page, and complete the online application form. After you complete the form, we will contact you with more information. 

Step two: Pay your full tuition or pay a $325 non-refundable deposit.  Please follow this link to learn about how you can pay for this course.

Step three: Once we receive your payment, we will send you a letter of acceptance that you can use for your visa application. 

Step four: Get your visa and book your trip to Ottawa! 

Step five: Pay your full tuition and UHIP fees before the deadline. 

We will follow up with you throughout this process to offer help when necessary!

This Course is for You if:

  • You have a direct admission into an undergraduate program with the requirement to complete ESL2121 and/or ESL2361; or
  • You have a direct admission into an undergraduate or graduate program and would like to strengthen your English to get yourself off to a great start. Note that as part of the course you will have the opportunity to take ESL2361.
