Canada and Belgium at a Crossroads

Canada and Belgium at a Crossroads

As part of the state visit to Canada of Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians, the University of Ottawa and the Université catholique de Louvain joined forces to organize a scientific seminar entitled "Multilingual Education and Language Learning: Canada and Belgium at a Crossroads." We would like to highlight the role of Sylvie Lamoureux, the OLBI Research Chair of Language Management, in the organization of this event, along with Philippe Hiligsmann, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters of the Université catholique de Louvain.

OLBI was also represented at the panel of experts by Jérémie Séror, Director of OLBI and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The interventions of Jérémie Séror (ILOB), Bertrand Hamaide (Université Saint-Louis) and Piet Desmet (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) gave a presentation on the different experiences and recent research results related to language learning in the university context as well as the integration of new technologies in support of language learning.

Furthermore, during the conference, one of the students in our Immersion Program, Erika Copeland, gave an inspiring speech on the subject of her passion for languages and her personal experience within a trilingual environment (French-English-German). Erika is currently working under the direction of one of our experienced professors, Alysse Weinberg, in the context of her project in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP): The Linguistic and Identity Experiences and Development of a Student Registered in French Immersion Studies. The OLBI is proud to count Erika among its most involved students.

Richard Clément, Knight of l'Ordre des Palmes académiques 2018

We would like to congratulate our dear colleague, Richard Clément, who was awarded the Palmes académiques from the Ministry of National Education of France for his years of service to the French culture. This distinction honours his work, both within and outside of the educational community, as a researcher and as an administrator of OLBI

Dr. Richard Clément’s research is rooted in the social psychology of language and communication. More precisely, he studies phenomena such as changing identities, and social adjustment during the acquisition of a second language and intergroup communication.  His work has been published in both English and French across Europe and North America.

Born in Montréal and holder of a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario, Richard Clément is a Full Professor at the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa.

In 2008, Dr. Clément was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada and in 2015, he was named a Lifetime Honourary Member of the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT).

Our most sincere congratulations to Richard for this honourable distinction!

2018 CCERBAL Conference – Translanguaging: Opportunities and Challenges in a Global World

2018 CCERBAL Conference

This year, the Canadian Centre for Studies and Research on Bilingualism and Language Planning (CCERBAL) has chosen the theme of ''Translanguaging'': Opportunities and Challenges in a Global World for its 2018 Conference. This theme relates to a fascinating notion which refers to a complex use of more than one language as a combined resource. In the Canadian bilingual context, we have a lot to learn and gain from understanding this practice.

We face many challenging questions regarding ''Translanguaging'' in a variety of contexts: family, community, educational and institutional. Answering these questions will open discussions from multidisciplinary perspectives.

April 5, 2018 is the early bird registration deadline. Don't delay!
