Academic Bridging in English (ESL 0140)

ESL 0140 course

Course components

  • English for Academic Purposes: Working with University of Ottawa professors, students use online resources and tools to develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to effectively comprehend and communicate ideas in an academic context. They learn the discourse structures, grammar, and vocabulary required for effective communication in their fields of study and develop critical thinking and study skills.
  • Academic English Enrichment: Working with a teaching assistant from the University of Ottawa, students gain additional opportunities to master the academic language skills developed in the course. Emphasis is also given to helping students develop effective academic presentations and collaborate productively on group assignments.
  • University Integration Workshop: Students develop learning strategies and study skills necessary for success at the University of Ottawa. Through this workshop they acquire an awareness of the academic culture of Canadian universities, along with a bank of campus and community resources, while having opportunities to reflect on the intercultural skills needed to connect with professors and classmates on campus.
  • Interactive Learning Community: Students develop communicative and teamwork skills and acquire a sense of belonging in the university community by connecting with classmates.
  • Communication 1148: For students in ESL 0140, this academic course is taught by a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa and introduces students to basic concepts in interpersonal and organizational communication and provides students with an experience of an authentic university course.
